Toru HyodoThe 17th Annual Academic Conference/General Meeting of the Japanese Society for Hemodiafiltration (JS-HDF) will be held from September 3 (SAT) to 4 (SUN), 2011, at Pacifico Yokohama International Conference Center in Yokohama City.  On behalf of the organizing committee, I would express my sincere gratitude to your interest of this conference.
JS-HDF was established in 1995 and on August 24, 2009, it was incorporated as a specified nonprofit organization (NPO), starting a new membership and management system consisting of an executive board and council to maintain the society.  According to our articles of the society, JS-HDF has the following goals: development and promotion of HDF therapy, establishment of dialysis fluid purification, improvement in the prognosis of dialysis patients and their complications, and international exchange to develop global standards for dialysis therapy and to support developing countries.  To meet these goals and to encourage academic development, we are planning to hold an international symposium in the forthcoming conference and have invited world-widely renowned clinicians and researchers from Asian and European countries.  The symposium is designed to facilitate participants' discussion of methodologies of HDF developed in each country as well as to introduce HDF implemented in Japan, and to contribute to Asian countries where the dialysis population is rapidly growing.  For this reason, the theme of the conference is [Japanese Proposal of a New HDF Therapy to the World].  The international symposium will be held on the Day 1 (September 3) of the conference.  With the purpose of promoting the development of new HDF therapies, programs on the Day 2 (September 4, although most papers will be presented in Japanese) will put emphasis on the future advancement of HDF therapy in Japan and our global contributions in this field.
We sincerely hope that you will visit Yokohama, a place of cultural enlightenment during the Meiji era, and enjoy a meaningful and wonderful time.  We are now making preparations and putting our best efforts into improving the management of the conference and program content.  We appreciate your continued support for the success of the 17th Academic Conference/General Meeting of the JS-HDF.  Hoping to see you all in Yokohama.

January 2011

Kenji Sakurai,M.D.,Ph.D.

Executive Adviser
The 17th Annual Meeting of the Japanese Society for Hemodiafiltration

Kenji Sakurai MIn April 2010, on-line hemodiafiltration (HDF) was included in the reimbursement for HDF treatment, on the condition that an approved dialysis monitor is used. With this change, thus, on-line HDF is officially approved, which marks the first step in the successful establishment of on-line HDF.

I believe that if performed properly, pre-dilution on-line HDF, advanced in Japan, is the most suitable treatment option, with a 4-hour dialysis session 3 times a week. Using appropriate settings, pruritus, restless legs syndrome, and restlessness occurring during and after dialysis can be treated within one to 4 weeks and smiles can be put back on the patients' face. This treatment is certainly effective for dialysis amyloidosis

At present, various therapeutic options are available, including short-time and frequent hemodialysis, long hemodialysis therapy and home hemodialysis. The high-performance type V dialyzer is appearing in the market. I think it is time to recognize the importance of understanding the real advantages of on-line HDF and establish the key points in the appropriate performance of HDF.

Please join us at the 17th annual meeting of the Japanese Society for HDF to discuss and offer the best on-line HDF and to mark the 2nd step in the successful establishment of on-line HDF. I promise that I shall work hard to raise the standard of this conference to meet your expectation.
